This course is for
people who would like to practice their speaking skills in
job-related topics, improve their English accuracy, and increase
their English vocabulary.
The
participants must be able to speak English at an intermediate level or
better.
One goal of this seminar is to practice and
improve one's skills in giving oral reports to a small group and leading
dicussions. Another goal is to expand one's vocabulary. Participants
take turns teaching each other new words and phrases which have been learned
during the process of reading an article and preparing an oral report on it.
BUSINESS COMMUNICATION SKILLS
Oral Reporting
— Each participant chooses an interesting work-related or general
business article in English (several are provided but they can bring
their own if they prefer), then prepares and gives an oral report on its
contents. The language necessary for giving an informal presentation
will be input and practiced during the activity. This activity is
video-taped and burned onto a CD for each participant to keep after the
training.
Facilitating a
Discussion
— After giving his
or her oral report, each participant leads a discussion with the other
participants based on the contents of the article or on related topics.
The language necessary for facilitating a discussion will be input and
practiced during the activity.
This activity is captured as a video file and either copied to
the participant's notebook computer or burned onto a DVD to take
away after the course.
Participating in a
Discussion
— Each participant
has the opportunity for a lot of speaking practice when others are
leading discussions. The topics are always interesting and related in
some way to the professional interests of the group members.
Vocabulary Building
Strategy
— As part of the task of oral reporting, the discussion leader also
chooses and teaches a few new words and/or phrases from the article. The
participants also learn an effective method for organizing and learning
vocabulary after the course.
ENGLISH
PROFICIENCY
Correction and Feedback
—
Corrections
are made throughout the course and helpful suggestions for improvement
are made as much as possible. Questions from the participants about
English are always welcome and short explanations of the rules are given
as necessary.
Classic Mistakes
—
Some
mistakes are typical for Germans. Some of the more important ones will
be explored in a spirit of fun.
Vocabulary Building
— As much as
possible, participants will be given not only correction for their
mistakes but also alternatives for what they have said correctly, to
expand their English horizons. Additionally, when participants say
something especially well, this is pointed out for the benefit of
everyone.

GOALS
To get speaking practice in topics related to one’s own work.
To increase one’s vocabulary.
To master a new strategy for expanding one’s vocabulary after the course.
To master language that will ensure cultural correctness through politeness and respect.
To learn a strategy for discussions that reduces conflict and incoherence.
To identify one’s own most important, persistent English mistakes and to correct them.
METHODS
Each participant is given an
article on a topic related in some way to his profession.
(Articles can be chosen and brought to the course by the
participants if they like.) Participants prepare oral reports on
their articles and take turns presenting them. Following each
report, the participant leads a discussion and answers questions
on the topic. In addition, the participant chooses meaningful
words and phrases from the article and teaches the group the new
vocabulary. Methods for doing this are given by the trainer.
When the participant is not reporting or leading a discussion,
he is taking notes and taking part in the discussions.
